Every year, thousands of students in Maharashtra sit for board exams. Yet only a fraction consistently score 90% and above. Is it intelligence? Natural talent? Absolutely not. It's strategy, consistency, and the right guidance.
At ISM Classes, we've coached over 500 students to score 90%+ in the last 10 years. Here are the exact 10 strategies we teach every student who walks through our doors.
Before You Begin:
Download the official syllabus from the Maharashtra State Board website. Know exactly what topics are included — and more importantly, which ones aren't.
1. Start With a Subject-Wise Plan (Not Just a Timetable)
Most students make a colorful timetable on Day 1 and abandon it by Day 3. Instead, create a subject-wise chapter priority list. Categorize each chapter as: High Weightage, Medium Weightage, Low Weightage. Focus 70% of your time on high-weightage chapters.
2. Solve Textbook Exercises BEFORE Practice Papers
The Maharashtra SSC board draws 80% of questions directly from textbook exercises. Students who skip these and jump to sample papers miss easy marks. Complete every exercise, every diagram, every example problem in your textbook first.
3. The "Write, Don't Just Read" Rule
Research shows that writing activates deeper memory encoding than reading. For every chapter you study, summarize key points in your own words. This is the single biggest study habit difference we see between 70% scorers and 90% scorers.
4. Solve Last 5 Years Board Papers Under Exam Conditions
Set a timer. Sit at a desk. No interruptions. These conditions train your brain for the actual exam environment. At ISM Classes, we make students solve at least 3 past papers per subject in simulated conditions.
5. Master the Marks Distribution
SSC board follows a predictable marks distribution:
- 1-mark MCQs: Usually very factual. Revise definitions and formulas.
- 2-mark questions: Short answers. Practice concise writing.
- 3-mark questions: Semi-detailed. Structure matters.
- 5-mark questions: Full answers with diagrams (if applicable).
Once you understand this, you can allocate exam time more intelligently.
6. Don't Ignore Diagrams & Maps
In Science, Geography and History, labeled diagrams often carry 3-5 marks. Students who practice these consistently gain an easy 10-15% boost in their total score.
7. Weekly Self-Evaluation Tests
At ISM Classes, every student takes a chapter-wise test every week. Why? Because self-testing is the most efficient study method proven by cognitive science. It forces recall rather than passive review.
Pro Tip:
Don't check answers immediately. Wait 10 minutes after completing a self-test, then review. This gap strengthens memory consolidation.
8. Sleep 7-8 Hours — Non-Negotiable
Sleep is when your brain consolidates memories. Students who sleep less than 6 hours retain 40% less of what they studied. Topper Rohan Mehta (98.8%) slept 8 hours every night during board preparation. It's not a luxury — it's a study strategy.
9. Form a Study Group of Maximum 3 People
Teaching a concept to someone else reinforces your own understanding. Form a group of 2-3 students, rotate who "teaches" each topic. When you can explain it simply, you truly understand it.
10. The Day Before Exam: Light Revision Only
Do NOT study new topics the night before. Review your notes, key formulas, and important diagrams only. Sleep by 10 PM. Eat well. Your brain needs rest to perform, not more inputs.
